While a great deal of paperwork is now stored on computers thanks to scanners, some papers are too valuable not to have a hard copy. One of the best ways to organize personal files is by category. Keeping vital records such as birth certificate, marriage certificate, Social Security card in one file while keeping chronological financial statements in another helps cut down on the amount of time spent leafing through unrelated papers that a different system may require. Common headings to file paperwork under include tax records, medical information, personal property, insurance, utilities and warranties.
