Draw Plans For A New Bathroom

Drafting software can help you draw plans for a new bathroom.

A key part of drawing plans for a new bathroom is determining the number of "wet walls" you have available for your plan. A wet wall is a wall behind which plumbing for the shower, sink and toilet is located. In general, the more wet walls a plan has, the more expensive it will be to build the bathroom--though the more layout options you'll have available to design the plan. Drawing your own plan for a new bathroom can help ensure that the resulting bathroom matches your exact needs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Using a measuring tape, paper and pencil, measure the space available in the home for the new bathroom and record this information on paper. For example, if you're converting the space currently used for a closet to the new bathroom's space, measure the depth and width of the closet.

2. Draw on paper, using a ruler, a rectangle indicating the bathroom's exterior walls scaled down to a practical size for planning.

3. Draw the plan view of the bathroom's fixtures onto slips of paper that you can shift around the paper easily. Plan views are top views, and the fixtures are the bathtub, sink, toilet, and other immovable items you want in the bathroom. You can draw ovals to represent simple plan views, or find graphics representing them in interior design books. You can also find them on websites like the one for the library of the University of Oregon. On that site, type "house plans" in the library's search engine, then look for rooms labeled "bathroom" in the plans that result.

4. Create a layout for the bathroom by positioning the slips of paper containing the fixture plan views against the rectangle edges representing the bathroom's walls.

5. Jot down notes on any impressions the plan makes on you. Look for any places that seem too tight, inaccessible or hard to reach.

6. Continue creating new layouts and evaluating them. When you have a plan you're happy with paste down the slips of paper you made and trace the final design onto a new piece of paper.
