Decorate A Closet Door

Decorating a closet door can add zest and character to any room in your room. In addition to a few obvious methods of decor, such as adorning the door with photos of your favorite celebrity, you might also consider a few more permanent methods of improvement. Following are some ideas to show you just how much you can do with paint, a few small strips of molding and a bunch of creative ideas. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Decorate a Closet Door

1. Wash and clean the door to get it prepped for painting. Use warm, soapy water and an industrial size sponge to do this. Scrub gently to get any excess dirt, paint, dust, etc. off of the door. Don't forget to rinse the surface of the door with clean water after the initial washing.

2. Paint the door a solid color that will stand out in the room. You will almost certainly want to use a latex based paint for this, but you still have a choice of a flat wall paint or a glossy trim paint to make the door stand out.

3. Paint the door in two different hues. You can use colors that are very close on the color wheel or you opt for something bolder and choose two colors that are almost opposite on the wheel. You can divide the door in half with the two colors or have one color dominate and come two-thirds of the way down the door. You can even use a solid dark line to divide the space or perhaps even blend the two colors to create the feeling of an abstract painting.

4. Paint a landscape on the surface of the door with artists' acrylic paint that comes in a tube. The possibilities here are quite varied depending on your artistic skill and taste. A simple idea that is easy to execute and might look sharp once completed is painting the door a light blue and then adding white clouds on the front of the door. If you are more ambitious and with a fair amount of artistic skill, you could create a full landscape scene with a sky, mountains or hills in the background and a meandering stream or country road in the foreground..

5. Paint a pop art scene. This might actually be simpler than a landscape, since all you have to do is draw one or two simple objects and use a solid color as a background. Some of the popular contemporary images that might look good on the door include a birthday cake, a can of soup, a target, a vase of flowers or a large apple. Once you start thinking of ideas for your closet door, the possibilities could become quite numerous.

6. Project an image on the door with a slide projector and then trace the image with a pencil. Once the pencil drawing is complete, then you can go back and fill in the outline with a darker color of paint. This is a wonderful shortcut if you are not very confident of your drawing skill. Tracing is a lot easier than drawing and you can use the projected image as a color guide, if you decide to fill in the new object with fresh paint.

7. Make a collage from magazine pictures or from your own photographs of friends and places you have been. You can attach the pictures right to the door with push pins or attach a large cork bulletin board to your door and use that to pin up your photos. Postcards you have received or collected might also work. This idea would also go well with a fresh coat of paint, especially if you were intent on hanging a bulletin board on your closet door. You can use a lightweight hammer and a few finish nails to attach the bulletin board.
