Decorate With Rubbermaid Storage Tubs

Rubbermaid storage containers are inexpensive, sturdy and versatile. However, most people don't include them on a list of the most decorative house wares you can choose. Though made to be more functional than beautiful, if Rubbermaid containers are a needed feature in your home, you can still decorate with and around them. Take advantage of a variety of products, dress up your textures and arrange your containers well to make them add to the d cor rather than dress it down. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Search the Rubbermaid website to find the most attractive storage containers. Many Rubbermaid products that are designed for long-term use as storage furniture are better looking than the standard lock top, lidded boxes, including hinged plastic storage closets and bins, nestable shelf containers, closet organizers, and desk storage units. If decorating a children's room, check out the "Fun Shapes" products, which are colorful and shaped like toys animals.

2. Purchase black containers when possible. These are easier to coordinate and blend in with your home d cor, since they don't draw attention to themselves. They also have the added benefit of hiding the objects inside, which usually won't make good decorating.

3. Paint the containers with acrylic paint to match them to your d cor and make them look more attractive. If the containers have a smooth surface, rub them by hand with sand paper to rough them up before you paint; this will help the paint adhere.

4. Space out the containers within whatever room you're decorating. The less-than-decorative colors and textures of Rubbermaid plastic will draw the eye in their direction more when you group more than one container together. Space them out, and they'll be noticed less.

5. Contrast the plain textures of the containers with more interesting and active decorative items. The plain, solid-color Rubbermaid containers will act as visual palette cleansers when placed close to decorative items, furniture and wall hangings that have complex patterns and asymmetrical shapes. This will also draw attention away from the appearance of the Rubbermaid containers without making them look out of place in your decor.

6. Transform your large, short containers into end tables or a coffee table with internal storage by covering them with a large, rectangular piece of finished, furniture grade plywood. Alternately, if all you've got is a less attractive piece of wood, cover with both the wood and a tablecloth.
