Make An Attic Hatch

An attic hatch can be used to access small attic spaces.

An attic hatch is something that you can add to the inside of your home to give you better access to your attic space. The hatch can also be referred to as an attic scuttle hole, and the entire installation process should not take you longer than a few hours. The location of the attic hatch is usually inside a closet in your home or within a hallway. However, if you choose a closet location, then the cutout for the hatch will be more concealed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the space on your ceiling where you want the hatch to be located carefully. Use a pencil and tape measure to trace a rectangular piece that can be removed to create the hatch. Be sure it's large enough for you to access the space.

2. Put on safety goggles and a face mask. Then, use a jigsaw to cut around the rectangle you traced. Keep your cutting neat because you need the piece you cut out to complete the hatch. Remove the piece and set it aside.

3. Install a trim around the entire hole you cut. The trim needs to be wide enough to support the piece of ceiling that closes off the hatch.

4. Add weatherstripping all the way around the trim to help insulate the hatch. Weatherstripping can be added around the outside of the piece you cut from the ceiling as well.

5. Cut out a piece of rigid insulated sheathing that's one inch smaller all the way around than the ceiling piece you removed for the hatch. Secure the sheathing to the attic side of the ceiling piece using construction adhesive.

6. Use the construction adhesive to add a layer of batt insulation to the sheathing.

7. Turn the ceiling piece on its side and insert it into the ceiling hole. Turn it right side up and place it on top of the trim you installed to complete the hatch.
