Build A Potato Storage House

Proper temperature levels inhibit potatoes from sprouting.

Potatoes can be stored for long durations of time with the correct environmental controls. Since potatoes need a different environment than that of most houses -- mainly darkness, low temperature, ventilation and high humidity -- individuals wanting to store large quantities of potatoes may choose to build a potato storage house to store the potatoes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Control the temperature. The ideal temperature to store potatoes is 42 to 50 degrees fahrenheit. Your potato storage house will need a way to maintain proper temperature, either through insulation, temperature control devices or a combination of the two.

2. Control the humidity levels. Potatoes are made up of mostly water and they need humid storage conditions to prevent them from drying out. Commercial storage plants keep their relative humidity in the range of 90 to 95 percent.

3. Ensure proper ventilation. Potatoes need fresh air to store properly. Ventilate your potato house naturally or through ventilation devices.

4. Ensure a dark environment. Potatoes exposed to light make chlorophyll deposits, causing them to turn green. This can make the potato bitter or even toxic. Make sure that your potato house is shut off from light.
