Organize A Closet & Make Space Out Of Nothing

An organized closet makes finding the right outfit easier.

Because closets hold such a wide variety, and often large volume, of items, it is easy for them to become cluttered. By clearing your space of items that don't need to be there and then using a few tricks for making the best use of the space you have, you'll be able to use your closet more efficiently and have better access to the things you store there. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove everything from your closet. This is a good time to evaluate each item and decide if it belongs in this closet or if it is something you need to keep at all. Clothing that doesn't fit your body or your style anymore can be donated to charity or sold in a yard sale. If you're storing things you haven't even looked at in years, it may be time to get rid of them. Culling items you don't need or want anymore is one of the best ways to give you more room in your closet.

2. Evaluate your closet now that it's empty. There may be space overhead where you could put shelves for long-term storage. The back of a door is often under-utilized closet real estate. If your closet is particularly deep or long, you may be able to fit a storage unit inside. This is especially true if your closet reaches under a stairs or in some other way has an otherwise unusable portion.

3. Hang a shelf 12 inches above the current shelf that may already exist on top of the closet rod. This is a good place to store seasonal items or sentimental items that you want to keep but don't need to use or look at regularly. Similarly, a shelf hung over the door of the closet may not be the easiest to get at, but is extra space for long-term storage.

4. Hang a second closet rod halfway between the floor and the first closet rod. Make this rod half the length of the first rod. This gives you extra space to store shirts and jackets above and pants and skirts below. The other half of the taller rod will still be available for hanging longer items.

5. Utilize the back of your closet door by hanging a shoe rack there. A metal rack will hold many pairs of shoes, clearing up space on the closet floor for other storage. A shoe rack with pockets can be used to store many items other than shoes. Try organizing your jewelry or ties and other accessories in these convenient pockets. A hook on the front of the door can hold your next day's outfit as well.

6. Tuck a small dresser away in the back of your closet, or against a side wall, to provide you with a lot of room to store out-of-season clothing, accessories, sweaters or any other clothing that you can fold rather than hang. Hanging your shoes on the back of the closet door may open up the space for a piece of storage furniture inside your closet.
