Redoing A Closet Into A Craft Room

Turn an unused closet into a space devoted to your favorite craft.

If you're a crafter, you've probably seen photos of large, impeccably organized and decorated craft rooms, and thought "I'd love to have a room like that." For most people, budget and space constraints make it impossible to devote an entire room to crafting. However, if you have an extra closet, you can have an area for your hobby that doesn't require dragging all of your supplies to the dining room table to complete a project. A closet craft area may be small, but with some careful planning, it can be a functional and organized space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the closet area, and figure out what you need for storage before purchasing any storage units or workspaces. For example, if you plan to use the space for scrapbooking, you'll need storage for paper and embellishments, while those who want to use the space for sewing will need fabric storage.

2. Prepare the closet for the makeover. Remove everything from the closet and take down the closet rod. Paint the inside of the closet or add a patterned wallpaper to personalize the space.

3. Add lighting, if the closet is not already lit. An overhead lamp attached to the closet rod and plugged in to a nearby outlet is an inexpensive solution.

4. Install wall shelving along the back wall of the closet. Adjustable shelves allow you to accommodate a variety of craft supplies. Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs before installing the shelving supports, or use drywall screws and anchors, to ensure that the shelves will support your supplies.

5. Add a work area. A small table, desk or a wide shelf can serve as a work area for your craft projects.

6. Purchase rolling storage bins with drawers to store under the work area. This functional storage allows you to pull supplies out while you're working, and still store them neatly.

7. Hang a pegboard on the closet door for tool storage. Customize the pegboard with hooks, buckets and rails to keep your craft tools neat and organized.

8. Place a chair in the closet. Choose a small chair that fits under the table and allows you to close the door.
