Put A Closet In A Bedroom With No Closet

A bedroom closet is a very useful feature. If your bedroom has no closet, it is possible to build one yourself. This project takes time and special skills, but if you have the desire to learn and the ability to use typical power tools, it is within reach. It involves framing the closet in the existing space, essentially building an extra wall to enclose the closet space. Your closet can be any size, large enough to accommodate all the things you need to store. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the carpeting in the area where the closet is going to be installed by pulling it up with a carpet pulling tool.

2. Draw the area for the closet on the bare floor using a long carpenter's level and pencil. The lines you draw will outline the walls for the closet, so size them according to your needs.

3. Cut and mount 2-by-4-inch boards along the lines by nailing the boards to the floor with 2-inch long nails or screws with a power saw. Then cut out a section of the 2-by-4 board mounted to the floor with a hand saw to create a space for the closet door. Remove this section of board by hand once it is cut. Make it large enough for your door's width and jambs, which is typically between 32 and 36 inches.

4. Trace up the wall with a carpenter's level and mark with a pencil the point where the 2-by-4s intersect the walls. This establishes the beginning of the closet walls. Continue the lines along the ceiling with the carpenter's level, outlining where the mounts for the top of the closet walls will be.

5. Cut and mount 2-by-4s along the lines on the ceiling and walls using 2-inch nails.

6. Install 2-by-4s in between the two mounting boards on the floor and ceiling, 16 inches apart. These boards run floor to ceiling and make up the studs for the walls.

7. Install drywall on the outside and inside of the framed walls by measuring and cutting the drywall to fit along your walls. Use a drywall ruler and razor to score and then break the drywall to the appropriate length and width. Mount the drywall to the framed walls with drywall screws and a power screwdriver.
