Build A Desk In The Closet

Mounting a desk surface work space in your closet is a simple do-it-yourself project that takes less than an hour, start to finish. This project combines the utility of a good-size work desk with the convenience of a door you can close for privacy or for a cleaner-looking room. These plans are for a reach-in closet, but you can modify them slightly to make them appropriate for a walk-in. Keep in mind that lighting is sometimes a problem when working inside a walk-in closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the width and depth of your closet.

2. Cut the plywood sheet to match the width and depth of your closet, minus 1 inch per side. For a 24-inch by 40-inch closet, you would cut your plywood to 23 inches by 39 inches.

3. Sand the plywood, paying special attention to round the corners.

4. Use a stud finder to locate all wall studs in your closet, marking them with a pencil.

5. Cut two beams to match the depth of your closet. Cut the third beam to match the width of your closet.

6. Set your "width beam" against the back wall of your closet about 30 inches above the floor. Using your level to keep it horizontal, screw it to each of the wall studs using one wood screw per stud.

7. Set one "depth beam" against a side wall, level with the beam on the back wall. Screw it to each stud in the side wall using one wood screw per stud. Use a level to keep it horizontal.

8. Repeat step seven to mount the second "depth beam."

9. Lay the plywood sheet on top of the beams. Gravity and the weight of what you put on the desk should keep it in place, so you don't need to attach it to the beams.
