Do It Yourself Custom Closets

Customizing your closet with shelves and other items can help you get organized and save space.

If your closet could use a bit of organization or a face lift, tear out the old and customize the closet yourself. With new custom closet kits and organizational products appearing on the market regularly, you can design and install a custom closet in as little time as a single weekend and for half the price of hiring someone. Closet customization pieces come in all shapes and sizes, from bars and shoe organizers to shelves and drawers. When it comes to closet organization, you're limited only by your own creativity and skill. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure your closet. Write down the height of the closet and the width of each wall. If your closet varies in height in different spots, take a different measurement for each section.

2. Sketch a diagram of both your closet footprint and each wall.

3. Count the number of pieces of each type of clothing you have. Estimate how much space you'll need in your closet for each type of clothing using common clothing dimensions. For instance, 9 by 12 inches is typically needed for each pair of shoes.

4. Sketch a closet design on your original footprint and walls, based on the figures and measurements you took. Place bars. Add shelves and drawers. Keep in mind any space requirements between closet elements, such as with a track system.

5. Install closet organization elements in your closet per the manufacturer's instructions. Installation varies based on the type of system you're installing. Use a level and a pencil to sketch the closet layout for shelves and other items directly on the walls, if needed. In most cases, the lines will be covered during installation.
