Get More Space From Small Closets

Lack of organization makes a small closet seem even smaller.

If you are not lucky enough to have a huge, walk-in closet, it is important to organize your closet to make the most of the space you do have. Keeping your closet neat and tidy is a big part of maximizing space, and also makes it easier for you to pick out your outfit each day. Many clever ready-made storage solutions are widely available from department stores and online to help you get more space from your small closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Take everything out of your closet and lay it on your bed. Look through all your clothes, shoes and accessories and decide what to get rid of to free up space. If you haven't worn something for 12 months, get rid of it. Fill a box with items to donate to charity.

2. Find space for bulky and seasonal items, such as mud boots and ski jackets, elsewhere in your home. For example, a downstairs closet or storage box in the garage may work better. This will free up space for items you wear regularly.

3. Hang dresses, skirts, blouses and jackets. Invest in tree hangers, which enable you to hang up to five blouses in the space of one.

4. Attach a double hang closet system to the existing rod in a tall, narrow closet to take advantage of the extra height and compensate for the lack of width.

5. Fold sweaters and T-shirts and place them on shelves inside your closet. Fit a couple shelves above the clothing rail if your closet does not already have any. Use shelf dividers to keep stacks of folded garments neat and stop them from toppling.

6. Place shoes inside transparent shoe boxes and stack them neatly on the closet's floor. If floor space is tight, attach a hanging shoe holder to the back of the closet door.

7. Hang closet organizers from the back of the closet door for undergarments, hosiery, scarves and other accessories.
