How Long Is A Closet Rod

A closet rod installs inside your closet to hang clothing and other accessories like blankets and quilts. The rod is usually made of wood or metal and is specifically designed to work with clothing hangers. These rods save space and prevent wrinkled, creased clothing by allowing garments to hang vertically, but there is no set length for the closet rod. Does this Spark an idea?

Bedroom Closet Rod Length

A bedroom closet rod is usually as long as the closet itself. It typically stretches across the width of the closet with a single shelf on top. Many closets in today's homes are between 4- and 8-feet long. However, the closet size may vary from home to home. You need about 4 feet of rod length to hang all the clothes for one person, which means a closet built for a master bedroom with two people is 8-feet long.

Coat Closet Rod Length

Coat closets are smaller than a bedroom closet. They're main function is to hang up coats and jackets for a family. Depending on how large the home is and how many bedrooms, the coat closet is between 2- and 4-feet long. A larger home with four or five rooms will house several people, meaning more coats. Therefore 4 feet of closet rod length is necessary. The coat closet rod in a typical home built for four people is between 28 inches and 3-feet long, which is also the typical width of most coat closets.

Stacked Closet Rods

Another option in today's closet organizers is a stacked or dual closet rod, which means that two closet rods are placed one on top of the other inside the closet. In this case the closet rod is much shorter than normal, and it is not the same width as the closet itself. The closet rod is usually half as long as it should be because there are two of them now. In double closet rods, each may be between 3- and 4-feet long, offering enough hanging space for one person on each rod.

Modular Closets and Closet Organizers

Closet organizers and modular closets built to fit inside a large walk-in closet are a different story. These closets are built to save space and include many types of shelving, drawers and storage areas. The shelves often install vertically, taking up one side of the closet wall. In this case the closet rod will not span the width of the closet. Instead it will reach across part of the closet wall, stopping short of the shelving space, or it will install between the wall and the vertical cabinets. The rods in a walk-in closet are typically 6- to 8-feet long.
