Build A Closet Against A Wall

Adding a closet to your home is a straightforward project.

Converting a den into a bedroom or needing more closet space may motivate you to build a new closet in an already existing room. Putting a closet against an already existing wall, especially in a corner, is not a difficult project and will give you the extra storage space you need. Since you are building the closet, you can determine the dimensions that work best for your needs, especially when it comes to shelving and storage. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine the size and location of your closet and measure the distance so you can purchase the right materials. When purchasing drywall, remember you are going to wall both the inside and outside of the closet. If you are planning on hanging clothes in the closet you need it to be a minimum of 24 inches deep. Find the studs and joists in the ceiling, since you need to attach the frames of the wall to them, and this will determine in part how big your closet is. Mark where the joists and studs are now.

2. Cut the two-by-fours for the frame of the closet. Since you will be installing doors you need to know the height of the doors and create a place in your frame to install the doors. You need a frame for the front of the closet, and one for the sidewall of the closet. The studs should be about 16 inches apart from each other, with an extra stud where the doors will hang.

3. Install the frames into the ceiling joists and the sidewall studs. Nail the studs into place. If you are installing the closet in the basement you will need to use concrete or cement nails for the base of the frame. Cut the bottom of the closet door out of the frame after the frame is installed. This allows you to run the carpet or other flooring into the closet without interruption.

4. Attach the drywall to the inside and outside closet walls. Cut the drywall before you hang it, and measure it so you have the fewest seams possible. Use screws to attach the drywall into the studs. Spackle the screw holes and the seams of the drywall, then sand and paint the walls of the closet both inside and out.

5. Put the shelving into the closet that you have determined you want. Purchasing a shelving system is the easiest way to create a usable closet.

6. Hang the doors for the closet. Depending on the size of your closet you can have double hanging doors, sliding doors or double doors that open out into your room. The doors will come with a track that you need to lay down on the floor and attach to the top of the door frame before you hang the doors.
