Attaching casters to furniture can be a great way to easily move large or bulky pieces around. Although they appear to be wheels, casters are slightly more complex than a simple wheel and can pivot and turn in any direction. Whether attaching casters to furniture for portability or for their high maneuverability, this project can be done in an afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Find the piece of furniture that needs casters attached. This can be an old chair, couch or table that needs the ability to move easily.
2. Remove any existing broken wheels from the legs of the piece of furniture. Take off any skid-resistant tape or attached skid protection already in place.
3. Sand the very bottom of the foot with medium grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust or debris from the foot.
4. Purchase a set of casters. These can be found at any hardware or home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot. Verify the caster set is suitable for the project's needs.
5. Drill a tap-hole into the bottom of the unit's leg from the foot bottom inward the length of the caster's attaching shaft. Ensure the tap-hole is slightly smaller than the caster shaft's circumference.
6. Place a small amount of wood glue to the inside of the drilled tap-hole. Push the caster shaft into the tap-hole as far as it will go.
