Diy Wardrobes

If you are trying to cut costs and save money but still want to look good, a DIY wardrobe is a good solution. With only minimal sewing skills, you can remake, refashion, sew and even design your own clothes to expand your wardrobe. Moreover, DIY clothes are fun to make, a creative challenge and allow you to express yourself.

Refashioning

Many people begin their DIY wardrobes by refashioning garments they already own or working with inexpensive thrift store finds. For example, you can remake an oversized T-shirt into a smaller, fitted one. Shorten or reshape skirts. Remake a man's dress shirt into a peasant style blouse, a short dress or tunic, or even a toddler's dress. Some garments can even be entirely reconstructed. Make an out-of -style dress into a short swingy jacket or a flowing skirt. While you can refashion clothing entirely by hand to make your DIY wardrobe, a sewing machine will speed up the process. Be creative and experiment when working on refashioning projects.

Sew a DIY Wardrobe

If you are more confident in your sewing skills, you may want to tackle sewing your own clothing. Visit your library for a good sewing manual, like those by Butterick or Vogue. Start with a simple garment, like a skirt or even pajama pants. As you get more comfortable, work on fit and tailoring to make your DIY wardrobe suit your personal style. With experience, you will be able to sew formal wear, casual and comfortable garments and even your work wardrobe.

Accessorize

Adding accessories can bring life and versatility to DIY wardrobes. Make your own jewelry using beads and wire, add knitted or crocheted scarves, fingerless gloves or brooches or experiment with felted jewelry. A standout accessory can make a simple outfit appropriate for any occasion. Sew handbags and tote bags from new fabrics or recycled ones. You can even reuse old jewelry, belts and leather to make the accessories you love for your DIY wardrobe.
