Build A Cubby Shoe Organizer

Organize your shoes with a cubby shoe organizer.

A cubby shoe organizer is the perfect idea for all those shoes that accumulate over the years. These little organizers fit anywhere you need them because you are building your own. Building a cubby shoe organizer requires only minimal woodworking skills, and the wood used does not have to be expensive. The size and types of shoes you have dictate the size and shape of each individual cubby. Make them all the same or make one row taller than the rest. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place the eight pieces of 12-by-33-by-½-inch plywood (tops and bottoms) on a worktable. Measure from one end and make marks at 6½, 7, 13, 13½, 19½, 20, 26 and 26½ inches.

2. Put the framing square on each mark and draw lines across the 12-inch width of the plywood. Drill pilot holes between the lines 1-inch from the edges and one in the center with the 1/16-inch drill bit.

3. Apply glue to the 12-inch ends of six of the 12-by-16-by-½-inch plywood (dividers). Stand one of the 33-inch pieces on its long edge, and place the dividers between the lines and secure them with the 4-penny finish nails through the pilot holes (install one divider on either end as well).

4. Repeat Step 3 for the remaining ½-inch plywood pieces. Clean up excess glue immediately with a damp cloth. Stand all four of the cubbies upright.

5. Apply glue to the top of one cubby and place another one on top of it, aligning the edges. Secure them with the ¾-inch wood screws. Apply glue to the top of the second row and secure the third row of cubbies in the same manner. Install the last one just like the first two and clean up the excess glue with a damp cloth.

6. Lay the cubby down on the worktable. Apply a bead of glue on the exposed edges. Place the 33-by-68-by-¼-inch plywood on the cubby shoe organizer and align it with the outside edges of the cubby.

7. Secure the ¼-inch plywood to the cubby with the 4-penny box nails. Turn the cubby over and clean up the excess glue with a damp cloth.
