Remodel Small Bedrooms

Make the most of your small bedroom.

Living in a small space can be tricky. It's easy to get overwhelmed when nothing has its own place. A bedroom should be functional, and it's difficult to function when you don't know where everything is. Maximize any small bedroom by choosing colors wisely, focusing on function and avoiding clutter at all costs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Color with Care

1. Choose a color that makes the most of your space. If you're intent on painting the whole room, opt for a light shade. If you're set on a dark shade, choose one accent wall and leave the rest of the room neutral.

2. Apply two coats to get an even color.

3. Use a color palette to choose coordinating colors for the rest of the room. Try ColorSmart at Behr.com for make some educated choices. Opt for complementary comforters, art and accessories.

Focus on Function

4. Futon by day, bed by night.

In a small room, everything should serve a purpose. Whenever possible, make things serve two purposes. Choose a bed that doubles as seating. For an extra-compact room, opt for a futon that can work as a couch during the day, or even a Murphy bed that folds up into the wall.

5. Keep a yoga mat underneath a comfy rug so that you only need to lift the rug to have a place for your workout.

6. Choose versatile lighting. Go for floor lamps that have shelves built into them to avoid a wall of bookshelves.

Avoid Clutter

7. Keep flat surfaces free of clutter. Once you've lost the battle with the nightstand, the desk is next. Always keep paper and debris off your table to keep your room neat and make it look bigger.

8. Give everything a place. If you need a specific item, then it should have a designated home. If you don't need an item, throw it away or donate it to keep it from cluttering your room.

9. Use it or lose it. Get rid of anything that hasn't been used in over a year.
