Rehang A Closet Door

Rehang a Closet Door

If that old closet door is coming loose from its hinges and the wood holding it in place to the jamb is splintering and hole-ridden from previous hinge adjustments, you might consider rehanging it. This is a pretty straightforward project in which you're simply going to remove both hinges from their current positions, move them to new positions where the wood is solid, and reinstall them. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Unscrew the hinge plates from the doorjamb to remove the door. Then unscrew the hinge plates from the door itself.

2. Stand the door with its front edge, so the edge where the hinges go is facing up. Set the top hinge on the edge of the door, directly below the indentation in the wood where it was sitting before. Trace around the edge of the hinge with your pencil, then set the hinge aside.

3. Cut around the pencil mark with your razor knife, making the cut about as deep as the thickness of the hinge. Use your hammer and chisel to peel off a layer of wood within the line at that depth.

4. Set the hinge in place and mark on the wood where the screw holes are. Remove the hinge, drill pilot holes at each of the marks, then set the hinge back in place and secure it with 1-1/2-inch wood screws.

5. Repeat the process for the other hinge, but position it just above the previous hinge indentation, instead of just below it.

6. Stand the door in the doorway, get it at the right height and depth to close properly, then press the loose sides of the hinge flaps against the jambs. The top hinge should be positioned just below the indentation of where it was previously on the jamb, and the bottom hinge should be positioned just above the previous location. Trace both hinges with your pencil, then remove the door and cut and chisel the lines on the jamb as you did on the door.

7. Drill pilot holes in the jamb as before, then hang the door using 2-inch wood screws.
