Make A Closet In A Bedroom With No Closet

Closets keep shoes and hanging clothes neat and out of view.

Closets are fundamental when you want to keep things neat in a bedroom. You can fold many clothes, but dresses, skirts and suit jackets require hanging to remain wrinkle-free. If there is no closet, there are several options, including purchasing a wardrobe. But if you own the home and you want to do something more permanent, you can build a standing wall with a clothes bar. Add a cloth shower curtain to close off the space and you will have a fashionable place to hang your things. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the distance between the floor and the ceiling, at the wall and at 26 inches out.

2. Cut two studs the length of the two measurements you took minus 3 inches.

3. Cut two 2-by-4 studs 26 inches long. Most closets are 24 inches deep in the interior, at a minimum. For coats, add 2 inches to the 26-inch length. If you use the 26-inch depth, cut two 2-by-4 studs to 23 inches.

4. Assemble the studs on the floor to form a box. The two vertical studs go in between the two 26-inch 2-by-4s. Insert two nails through the side of each 26-inch board into each end of the vertical studs -- eight nails in all.

5. Place the 23-inch boards between the vertical studs, one about a third of the way up and the other about two-thirds of the way up. Attach them with two nails on each end, driven through the outside of the vertical boards.

6. Stand the stud box up and work it into place an appropriate distance from a side wall in the bedroom. Make sure that it is perpendicular to the rear wall and parallel to the side wall before nailing the stud form in place.

7. Nail the stud form to the ceiling and floor with nails every few inches. If possible, align the wall with a ceiling stud, which you can locate using a stud finder.

8. Cut the plywood to fit the wall frame you just created. Nail the plywood to the outside of the wall frame.

9. Prime the wall on the inside and outside; use a brush to get into corners. After the primer dries, add a coat of paint that complements your room colors.

Clothes Hanger

10. Cut the wooden rod to reach from one end of the closet to the other.

11. Install rod hanger holders in the closet, one on the side wall and one on the upper cross board you installed. Start by screwing one holder into the cross board. Place the wooden rod into the rod holder, hold the level on top of the rod and place the other rod holder on the wall with the rod resting in it. Make sure the rod is level and mark the wall with a pencil.

12. Remove the rod and align the rod holder to the pencil mark. Screw the rod holder into the wall and reinstall the rod.

Closet Curtain

13. Install a spring-loaded curtain rod across the opening of the closet. Place one rod end against the wall, press the rod in and position it against the stud. Level the rod.

14. Hang shower-curtain rings over the spring-loaded rod.

15. Slip the slots in the shower curtain over the shower curtain rings to hang the shower curtain.
