Make An Overthedoor Shoe Hanger

Shoe organizers prevent messy closet floors.

A homemade over-the-door shoe organizer is useful in keeping pairs of shoes together and off the closet floor. It is also useful in storing thick winter scarves, fleece hats, gloves and other winter gear. Making your own shoe organizer allows you to custom-fit the pockets for your shoes. For instance, you can make large deep pockets for leather boots or smaller ones for a child's bedroom. This project requires no sewing skills and inexpensive supplies. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the inside of your closet door to determine how wide and long the shoe hanger should be.

2. Cut the shower curtain to the measurements, but don't cut off the end where the shower hooks go through the plastic. This allows you to drape it easily onto over-the-door hooks. The remaining piece of shower curtain is to make the pockets.

3. Measure the size pockets you need for your shoes on the remaining shower curtain section. Most shoes fit into a pocket that is approximately 14 by 14 inches square, but the size depends on your needs. Make some pockets quite large to accommodate boots and others that are smaller to hold sandals or flip flops.

4. Draw the pocket squares onto the spare shower curtain section. Use a fine-point permanent marker to do this.

5. Cut out the plastic shower curtain squares with a pair of sharp scissors.

6. Glue three sides of each pocket to the shower curtain you cut to fit the door. Leave the pocket open at the top to slip the shoes inside. Use cyanoacrylate glue or contact cement to glue the pockets wherever you desire. Allow time for the adhesive to dry thoroughly.

7. Attach over-the-door hooks to the top of your closet door. Slide the hooks into the holes in the shower curtain where the rings normally fit. Your over-the-door shoe hanger is ready to use.
