There are several ways to get to Canada from New York City.
Canada borders the full width of northern New York State, from the city of Buffalo in the west to Vermont in the east. Montreal is the closest major Canadian city to the Bronx, about 320 miles north of New York City. There are several ways to reach Montreal and other parts of Canada from the Bronx.
Instructions
1. Drive north on the Major Deegan Expressway (87), which begins at the north end of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge (Triborough) and has several entrance ramps along the Harlem River. Continue on 87 north for about 330 miles until you reach the Canadian border. Here, 87 will turn into Canadian Highway 15 and continue northward to Montreal, passing a series of towns along the way.
2. Visit the Trailways NY website and purchase tickets from New York Port Authority to Montreal. Take the B or D subway downtown to the 42nd Street/Times Square stop. Follow the signs to Port Authority bus terminal. Locate your bus on the departures listings and board when instructed. The Montreal trip takes about eight hours and costs about $82 per person.
3. Visit the Amtrak website and purchase tickets from New York to Montreal. Take the B or D train downtown to the Columbus Circle stop. Transfer to the A, C or E train downtown to Penn Station. Follow the signs to the Amtrak train lines and locate your train on the departures board. Trains to Montreal depart Penn Station at 8:15 a.m. daily and arrive at 7:10 p.m. The ticket price is $62 as of 2011.
4. Visit an online travel website for a full listing of available flights from the New York area to Canadian gateway cities from Montreal to Vancouver. The closest airport to the Bronx is John F. Kennedy Airport, which is located in Queens about 16.4 miles south of the Triborough Bridge. Jet Blue Airlines sometimes has very low fares from New York to Montreal.
