Closet Problems

There are a number of common problems with closets, but most are easy to solve. By making just a few simple changes, nearly any closet problem can become a thing of the past. If you have the inclination to do things on your own, take a moment to consider these solutions to typical closet problems. Does this Spark an idea?

Broken Doors

One frequent problem is broken bi-fold or sliding closet doors. These are an annoyance but are easy to repair. To fix bi-fold doors, just lift the bottom of the door and adjust the hinge pin by sliding it along the bracket underneath the door. This tilts the door so it is flush and straight and no longer rubs against the door jamb. If the hinge pin is broken, take it out and replace it. If the issue is with one of the rollers in the bi-fold or sliding door, lift the door out of the track, remove the roller and replace it with a new one by sliding the new one into the roller hole.

Storage Problems

Storage is always an issue with closets today, because people tend to accumulate lots of things. If you need more storage for everyday items, consider hanging your folded clothes on empty closet rod space. This will make room for boxes, toys, tools and equipment you want to store in the closet. Using wood hangers or larger plastic hangers with padding is a good idea if you hang sweaters, blouses and specialty garments.

Clothing Rod Space

Another problem is having enough space to hang clothing on a closet rod. Many closets have only a single hanging bar stretched across the width of the closet. This allows for some storage space below and above the rod. However, if you raise the closet rod higher, and install another rod below it you double your hanging space. Install the top rod at 80 inches and the lower rod at 40 inches in this double-stacked design.

Odors

An odor in a closet is a big issue, because all your clothes can absorb the smell. When odors occur in a closet, there are several ways to remove them. Set an air freshener in the closet. Clean all clothing in the closet, wash the carpet and let the closet air out. Another option is to install cedar shelves. The cedar wood is known to soak up moisture and odors, reducing unpleasant smells that linger in your closet.
