Color Code Your Closet

An organized closet takes the frustration out of choosing an outfit.

If not properly maintained, wardrobes can look like an unsightly jumble of odds and ends. There are numerous ways to organize your closet to prevent it from going to seed. Some people like to separate areas for leisure, business and formal wear, for example. Color coding is another popular choice of partitioning clothes and restoring your closet back to its former self. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Throw away any clothes you rarely use. Most of us have lots of outfits simply gathering dust in the closet. Many charity shops or recycling centers would be grateful to receive these items, and it's a big step toward making your closet tidy.

2. Separate the clothes in your closet. Put bottoms such as trousers, leggings and jeans into one pile and tops such as T-shirts, jumpers and shirts into another. To do this, take all the clothes out of the closet or simply shuffle the hangers around until you have separated tops from bottoms.

3. Organize your bottoms by lightness of color. The most common way to sort colors is from light to dark. Start with whites, then move on to darker strains such as yellow, green and blue. Some colors may not appear to be darker or lighter than another. Simply decide a system in this case and stick to it. For instance, if you struggle to tell if green or blue is lighter, make blue the first as B comes first in the alphabet.

4. Sort items with multiple colors by focusing on the dominant color in the item, as this is the color that will appear most striking when worn. For checked clothes, use the alphabet system in step 2.

5. Order individual items once you have put them in order of color. Your wardrobe should now have mini-sections of shirts, T-shirts, jumpers, trousers, jeans and leggings, with each section color coded. This will keep you from rustling around looking for trousers among several different black items.
