Do It Yourself Closet Plans

No matter how much closet space your home has, you probably wish you had more. With the right closet organizers, you can turn wasted space into extra closet storage. Drawing up closet plans can help you focus on what you need to store your items in your closet space. That, in turn, can help you make better use of your closets. Does this Spark an idea?

Assess Your Closet Needs

Choose the closet you plan to organize. Before you remove anything from it, make a list of what you keep in the closet (see References 1). Decide if you plan to return the same items to the closet or if you plan to store some items elsewhere. Make a note of any odd-sized or oversized items you might have to make special space for.

Determine what proportion of the closet you need to devote to certain items. Long items such as dresses need special space. Try to determine how many lineal feet of closet rods you need.

Decide if you can use the back of the closet door for storage as well. Pocket doors or sliding doors generally don't work well for storage.

Measure the Closet

Carefully measure the interior of the closet. If you plan to add a cedar lining or make any changes to the inside walls of the closet before you add the closet organizers, make allowances for that. Remember to measure from floor to ceiling as well.

View Closet Designs

Check closet organizers websites for ideas (see References 2). Browse through books and magazines that feature closet makeovers. Visit a home improvement store to see what products you like. Make notes of what items you would like to incorporate into your closet space. Also, jot down the dimensions of the organizers you plan to use.

Draw Your Closet Plans

Sketch an outline of the closet plans. Rough in what pieces of closet equipment you wish to install. You may need to make several rough sketches to find the best use of your closet space.

Remember to allow space for seasonal items. These can go on harder-to-reach shelves. Also remember to make efficient use of floor space.

Create a scale drawing of your closet. Draw in the closet organizer items in the space where you plan to put them. When you have the scale drawing to meet your specifications, you are ready to start remodeling your closet.
