Build A Kitchen Appliance Storage Cabinet

Mixers and other appliances can be stored in a special cabinet.

The many kitchen appliances that make our lives so much easier nonetheless are not convenient to store on the counter or in the same cabinets as the dishes and food. On the counter, they take up too much space and can be an eyesore, and in the dish or food cabinets, they get in the way. Building them their own space allows for convenient organization of these appliances in a manner that is customized exactly to their storage needs and the available space of the kitchen. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Lay out two 1/2-by-24-by-48-inch plywood boards on the working surface, with a helper holding them upright on their long and thin edges. Keep these boards, which are the cabinet side boards, parallel to each other about 18 inches apart. Set a 1/2-by-18-by-24-inch plywood board, which is the top board, against one end of the side boards and move the boards as necessary to line up all of the edges evenly.

2. Make holes in the top board, spaced evenly every four inches, through the top board and into both of the side boards. Set 2-inch screws into these holes and fasten them tightly until the heads of the screws are flush with the wood surface of the top board.

3. Position a 1/2-by-17-by-24-inch board within the frame of the cabinet, four inches from the bottom of the cabinet. Drill four holes through each side board and into the ends of this board, which is the bottom shelf board. Set 2-inch screws in each hole and tighten them completely. Install additional shelving boards in this manner as desired.

4. Place a 1/2-by-18-by-48 1/2-inch board on top of the rectangular frame of the cabinet, lining up the outside edges so that they match with the outside edges of the side boards, top board, and the ends of the side boards. Drill holes every 12 inches through this newly added board, which is the rear board, and into the side, top and bottom boards. Set 2-inch wood screws in each hole and use a drill to tighten them securely in place.

5. Rotate the entire cabinet assembly so that there is an open frame facing upward. Position a 1/2-by-18-by-44 1/2-inch board and a 1/2-by-4-by-18-inch board on the open frame so that the smaller board covers the area of the frame below the bottom shelf board and the larger board covers the area above. Drill holes through the smaller board and into the side boards and bottom shelf board, spaced every 6 inches. Attach the boards together with 2-inch wood screws drilled through these holes.

6. Set four side-mount cabinet hinges on one side of the door and the adjoining side board. Mark the locations of the screw holes, lifting the door board if necessary to do so. Drill holes in each marked location, and attach the hinges to the door and side board with 1/2-inch wood screws.
