Building Designs For Closets

Storage baskets and bins inside a well-planned closet will maintain a workable system over time.

Good planning is the key to maximizing space in any closet. By figuring out exactly where all stored items will fit ahead of time, it's easier to construct a workable closet. It's important not to waste any space in the very top of the closet, for example, or overlook ways to use floor space effectively. A good layout will ensure you can keep the closet neat over time, too. Does this Spark an idea?

Sketch a Plan on Graph Paper

Begin the design process with accurate measurements. Figure out the exact interior depth, width and height of the closet. You will need to plan all shelving and drawers, for example, around hanging rods. Planning this is easier by utilizing graph paper. Sketch various ways to arrange a storage system before selecting a final plan.

Devise Multiple Hanging Rods

You may need several clothes rod sections. If you're planning the closet for a bedroom, you will want a hanging rod for suits or dresses, one for blouses or shirts and one for casual clothes. Establish the exact height and width for the hanging sections, so you can review the best options for well-crafted rods and other hardware needed. Sketch drawers, hooks and shelving to hold items that go with the clothes hanging in each section. For example, store scarves and ties near suits and dresses.

Review Ready-Made Systems

A good ready-made storage system can save a lot of time. Review closet systems up close at a home-improvement or storage-specialty store. Go online to get ideas as well. It's possible to build a system from scratch, but the problem with this option is creating smooth surfaces that won't snag clothes or skin. Creating a system from plywood and finished shelving is perfectly okay for a general storage closet for toys or sports equipment, however.

Focus on Support Strength

Create a closet system that is sturdy enough. If you plan to store camping gear in large bins, for instance, make sure the wall support framing and shelving material is strong enough to hold up over time. You don't want to open the closet doors and see sagging shelves. Placement of support brackets, types of screws used for installation and quality of hooks and hardware all come into play. Ask for advice from a sales expert at a home improvement store to ensure you're purchasing acceptable materials for construction.

Install Appropriate Doors

Build doors that work with the closet system. It's possible, for example, to construct pocket doors to close over a food pantry closet in a narrow hallway. Sliding doors with mirrors attached may work much better for closet doors in a master bedroom. Standard interior doors can work well in a large family room if the closet holds books, toys and media equipment. Just make sure there is adequate floor space for the doors to stand wide open while using the closet. Storing items is much easier if all of the closet's interior can be exposed at one time for organizing it.
