Benefits
Placing a five-drawer chest in your closet creates more storage space. The drawers allow you to stack items yet still have access to them. Additionally, you can use the top of the chest for storage, such as for stacking racks of shoes, handbags, hats, accessories or bins of socks. While it may seem odd at first to have a chest of drawers in your closet, home builders are actually installing built-in drawers in the closets of new luxury homes.
Drawbacks
This solution may not work for everyone. The main drawback involves how much space a five-drawer chest can take up in a closet. Not only must the chest fit, but the drawers require additional space to open. By moving your chest out of your bedroom, you gain floor space there but lose it in the closet. You also give up a spot for placing a lamp, clock or framed photos.
Finding Room
For obvious reasons, a chest of drawers works best in a fairly spacious closet. Measure your chest and closet carefully to determine whether or not the dresser will fit. If your chest is too large, consider trading it for a smaller one, such as a lingerie chest. Or, try rearranging your clothes and other items in the closet to make room. If your chest's size makes it impossible to maneuver through a small closet doorway, consider using two smaller ones or stacking drawers specifically made for closet organization.
Other Considerations
In addition to saving space in your bedroom, moving your chest to the closet lets you set up your closet as a dressing room. If your closet is large enough, hang a series of robe hooks next to the chest and place your jewelry or neckties on top of the chest. Hang a full-length mirror on the back of the closet door and add a hamper if there's room. Your bedroom will stay much cleaner and neater if all your clothing stays in the closet.
