Install Decorative Shelves

Hang decorative shelves in any room to display collections.

Decorative shelves are fairly easy to install, with a little patience and time. Decorative shelves offer an opportunity to add spice, flair and character to any room in your home. Use decorative shelves for holding collections of items, books, flowers or curiosities. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine where you want the decorative shelf located. It should have a bracket on each end to aid in installation. The standard acceptable hanging height for shelves is about head high for an adult.

2. Measure the shelf and mark the location of the installation brackets on the wall with a pencil. Check to ensure the shelf will be level by holding a level against the wall just above your pencil marks. If the bubble of the level floats between the two lines, then the decorative shelf will be level. If not, adjust the level until the bubble is between the lines and re-mark the wall accordingly with your pencil.

3. Drill the drywall anchors into place where you have marked the wall. Choose drywall anchors that will hold up to 90 pounds. Remember that you have to add the weight of the shelf to what you will be putting on the decorative shelf.

4. Hold the decorative shelf in place against the wall and insert the screws into the drywall anchors. Be sure to hold the shelf firmly so it doesn’t slip down and become uneven.

5. Place the desired items on the shelf, being careful to heed the weight limitations of the decorative shelf.
