Create A Closet Using Fabric And A Shower Curtain Rod

Hanging a tapestry creates a closet with an art display.

The type of shower curtain rod known as a tension rod installs without hardware to create an instant closet. Even if you don't sew, with the right fabric, you can create a neat, attractive closet. Make more storage space in minutes by installing the shower rod and using the fabric of your choice to conceal a clothes closet or storage space. Convert an alcove, end of a hallway or even a corner into a closet with three basic items and without any tools or sewing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a fabric that suits the room. Make a closet that matches the walls to create an optical illusion of more space in a small room. For example, use a cream sheet to blend in with cream walls. Alternatively, hang a tapestry, woven blanket or other decorative fabric to create a colorful display for your homemade closet.

2. Position the shower rod at the desired location. Hold the tension rod and twist the thicker end clockwise to increase the length, if needed. Make the rod long enough so that you'll need to compress the spring to put it in place. This holds the rod firmly in position.

3. Hang the fabric over the rod. Adjust the fabric so that it hangs to the desired length. Insert pins every four to six inches along the fabric where it hangs on the rod to mark the fold.

4. Take the fabric off the rod and fold it along the pins. Attach the clip-on rings along the fold so that they're evenly spaced, three to six inches apart. Clip the rings within three inches of each other for heavier fabrics, such as a tapestry or woven blanket.

5. Mark the wall under each end of the shower rod with a pencil. Take the rod down and insert it through the curtain rings. If the rings are close to the size of the rod, pull one of the rubber ends off the tension rod to make it easier to fit the rod through the rings. Put the tip back on the rod.

6. Move the rings to the center of the rod to help prevent the fabric from falling off. Lift the shower rod and compress it by holding it in two hands and pushing toward the center to make it shorter. Install the rod by lining each end up with the pencil marks and releasing the tension.

7. Straighten the fabric and curtain rings so the closet curtain hangs evenly.
