Create A Wall Bed In A Small Closet

Closet Wall Bed

Creating a wall bed in a small closet conserves space. Of course, the bed cannot be large, but you can plan out the space and make it a useful little cubby hole. People with boats have seen how a small space can be useful and still look great-you just have to do custom work. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the height and width of your closet door. For illustration purposes, let's plan on 28-by-72 inches. Build a simple box by connecting four 8-by-3/4 inch pine boards together with corner braces, the ends 26 inches long and the sides 80 inches long. Make sure you sandwich the ends between the sides.

2. Lay the plywood on top and drill pilot holes along the sides every 10 inches with your drill, through the plywood and into the sides of the box. Screw the plywood onto the sides with 1-inch wood screws.

3. Measure out from the wall on the interior of your closet, 11 inches. This will be enough room for the wood box and a couple of inches for the bedding. Cut away any carpeting with a sharp utility knife until you have a wood surface on the floor.

4. Center the piano hinge on the bottom of the headboard end that will be in the closet. Screw it into the wood with the included screws. Place it on the floor with the side of the hinge against the line you marked earlier. Screw it into the floor.

5. Stand the bed box up on its hinge and mark a point on the wall where you can attach a hook. Screw it in place. Unhook it and lay the bed box down. Add your mattress and bedding and you have a nice closet wall bed.
