Build Cubbies for the Closet
If your closet is stuffed from floor to ceiling, and you need a storage solution that offers many convenient compartments, construct cubicle storage units, or "cubbies." It's an easy way to store many different items in a neat, orderly fashion. Use shelving boards that are wide enough to support clothes, shoes or accessories in your closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Measure the Closet Wall
1. Measure the closet wall's length with a tape measure. Use this measurement for the length of your cubbies.
2. Measure the closet wall's height. Use this measurement for the total height of your cubbies.
3. Divide the height measurement by the height you want to make your each of your individual cubicles to determine how many cubbies will fit on the wall. Use this number to get the number of shelves you need. They will form the base and top of each each cubby.
Cut the Cubbies
4. Mark the length of the shelf bases on the 1-inch-by-12-inch wood boards with a tape measure and a pencil.
5. Cut two or more boards at a time until all the shelves are the proper size.
6. Cut the end supports for each shelf from the 1-inch-by-1-inch wood strips. Cut each strip to be 12 inches long, the width the shelves. Cut two for each shelf.
7. Cut the divider boards that will make the cubbies individual storage units once they are positioned vertically between the shelves. Cut these to the height measurement you have chosen for each cubby.
8. Cut as many divider boards as you need to evenly divide the shelves according to your closet's width measurement.
Put the Cubbies Together
9. Use a pencil, a level and a tape measure to mark the position of each cubby shelf on the wall. Draw a short line to mark where to attach each shelf support to the side walls of the closet.
10. Line up the shelf supports and nail them into the wall with the pneumatic nail gun.
11. Place each shelf board onto the shelf supports for the cubbies. Carefully nail each end into the shelf supports.
12. Insert the cubby dividers in between each shelf. Stand them up and apply wood glue to the top and the bottom before putting them in position. Nail into the shelf above and below with a pneumatic nail gun or a hammer and finishing nails.
13. Let the wood glue dry and then sand the unit smooth. Paint or stain your cubbies and allow it to dry before using your new closet storage solution.
