Many homeowners overlook potential storage space beneath a bed. Even a twin bed 1 foot off the ground offers more than 30 cubic feet of potential storage. Disorganized under-bed storage often becomes chaotic, messy and hard to access. However, by building some under-bed storage drawers, you can make good use of that space. These directions apply to a twin bed that sits at least a foot off the floor, but you can use the basic plan for any size bed. Just alter the lumber dimensions to suit your needs. Instructions
Build Drawer
1. Set up the four 9-inch-wide plywood sheets in a rectangle. The ends of the 35-inch long sheets should abut the inside faces of the 24-inch sheets. All four sheets should rest on the narrow, 1/2-inch thick edge. Glue them together and allow them to dry.
2. Nail the rectangular frame together with three finishing nails per seam. Drive the nails through the face of the 24-inch sheet and into the middle of the edge of the 35-inch sheet. All nails should be spaced evenly and about 1/4 inch from the outside edge of the lumber.
3. Set the remaining plywood sheet on top of the rectangular frame, its outside edges flush with the edges of the frame. Glue it in place and allow to dry.
4. Nail the plywood sheet in place with one finishing nail per corner and three evenly spaced finishing nails along each side. All nails should be about 1/4 inch from the outside edge, placing them on center in the frame below.
5. Sand the outside face of the drawer bottom. You can sand the other faces if you like, but the bottom is the only face that needs to be smooth.
Mount Pulls
6. Press the screw holes of your cabinet-handle pull into the stamp pad, then press them firmly against the center of one 36-inch by 9-inch face of your box drawer. Count to three and remove.
7. Drill pilot holes in the stamp-inked outlines left behind, using a drill bit the same diameter as the screws that came with your cabinet pull.
8. Attach the cabinet pull by sliding the screws through your pilot holes from the inside face of the plywood.
9. Slide the box drawer into position under the bed with the handle facing outward.
