Build Closet Shelf Corners

Install corner shelves in your closet to organize your clothing.

Clothing or larger storage closets are often designed to hold hangers with clothing on a clothing rack. If you require extra storage in your closet for folded clothes, shoes or accessories, install home-built corner shelves. Corner shelves provide a modern look to a traditional closet, while saving hanger space for your jackets and pants that need to be stored on hangers. To build and install a corner shelf in your closet, you need common woodworking supplies and tools from a local hardware store along with shelving brackets of your choice. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place the large protractor in the corner of the closet to determine whether the angle is an even 90 degrees. If the angle is not 90 degrees, look at the protractor to determine the angle and write it down. Use the measuring tape to determine the size of the shelf by placing it on the wall. The shelf can be limited by the closet space, so write down the measurements from both walls in the corner.

2. Draw the corner shelf on the plywood board, using the pencil, ruler and measurements you've taken. Create the angle from the closet corner on the plywood to draw the ideal corner shelf. When the lines have been drawn from the wall measurements, connect the ends to create a triangle. This can either be a straight line, a wavy design or a personal design.

3. Cut out the corner shelf, using a table saw. The table saw will allow you to create a modern and detailed design for the corner shelf edge. When done, use the sandpaper to remove splinters and cracks. Paint the shelf, if desired, using paint or stain and a paintbrush. Let it dry overnight, if needed.

4. Place the shelf in the corner and determine where it should be installed. Draw a line underneath the shelf on both walls of the corner. The line will indicate where the shelving brackets will be installed. Place one of the shelf brackets up to the line on one of the walls and attach it with the 2-inch-long screws and a screwdriver. Repeat the step for the other shelf bracket on the other line.

5. Place the corner shelf on top of the shelving brackets. Push the shelf into the corner. Attach the shelf to the shelving brackets, using the 3/4-inch screws. You may need to get down on all fours to attach the shelf, depending on how low you have installed it. Once done, place your items on the corner shelf.
