Diy California Closet

California closets are large and usually have a white color scheme.

California Closets is a commercial brand name, known for creating luxurious closets that are well-lit and spacious. California closets are usually of the walk-in variety, with walls covered in shelves, racks, and drawers for every possible use. While purchasing a California Closet can be quite expensive, you can use the company's products as inspiration when building your own closet from scratch. Think of the project not as simply installing a closet, but as furnishing a room for the purpose of dressing and clothing storage. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Choose a location for your closet. If you are building a new house, or are open to knocking down a few walls, you can make the closet any size you like---the larger, the better. If not, you can convert a small room into a California-style closet or remodel a walk-in.

2. Design the interior of the closet. It should primarily contain a mixture of clothing racks, shelves and drawers, covering all three walls. Dresser tops, bench seats, windows and mirrors are also common ingredients in a California closet.

3. Build your closet. Use real wood for the shelving, either painted white or with a dark natural finish. Don't worry about doors: if you want to be able to close off the front of the closet, install a curtain rod instead. Install small recessed spot lights into the ceiling, or a decorative light fixture if you prefer. Small shade lamps can be used instead, placed on a dresser or shelf. Add a free-standing dresser or small sofa in the middle of the closet as a final touch.
