Build Headboards Using Two Closet Doors

Save your old closet doors to make a headboard.

Old closet doors, whether they have intricate designs or stark simplicity, add character and style to a room. Whether you use two closet doors from your home or purchase antique ones, turning them into a headboard lends a visually interesting piece to a bedroom. Select identical doors for a continuity of looks. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine the height you want your headboard and cut each door down to size along the bottom edge in order to preserve the design or pattern on the top. Place one door between two sawhorses and cut it to size with a power saw, using the mark as a guide. Repeat the process with the other door.

2. Sand down the doors on the cut line until smooth. Fill in any gaps or dents in the doors with wood putty.

3. Position the cut doors next to one another, lined up evenly against the wall. Measure the width of the two doors and cut a piece of wood trim or molding in that size. Nail the molding across the top, so it spans between the two doors.

4. Locate the two nearest wall studs to where you plan to position the bed. Mark their locations and measure the width between them. Attach two large "D" rings to the back of each door. Place the "D" rings at the same width apart as the studs.

5. Install two picture hooks with a weight limit of at least 100 lbs. into the wall studs. Place them at the same height. Hang the "D" rings over the hooks to secure the closet door headboard to the wall.
