Closet Storage Options

Organize closets to add more storage space.

If you're like most people, your home has unused closet space. Areas above the items on the floor, and below the coats hanging from the rod, often go to waste. Closets can be made to fit storage and other items by modifying the space in different ways. Adding usable storage space to a closet can free up space elsewhere in the home or office. Does this Spark an idea?

Baskets and Bins

Baskets and bins can line the shelves in a closet. If the closet only has the one upper shelf, the rod can be removed or more shelves installed. The baskets can be lined with fabric for a nice touch, and labels adhered to the fronts if the bins to make it easier to find what you are storing. These can be used in place of drawers, and can be a good place to store a lot of small items, such as ties, belts, scarves or hats.

Totes are another option. Many types of tote containers are stackable, so shelves are not necessary for placement. Labels can be placed on their fronts so that you can easily identify what is in each.

Racks

Racks with shelves and wheels can be used on the floor of the closet to store different items. Choose small racks that can be placed in sideways to make it possible to add an extra rack or two.

Shoe racks can be attached to the back of the closet door, or hung from a hanger in the closet. This can help keep shoes off the floor.

Dressers

Small dressers can often be placed in closets, at the end of a walk-in or under a clothes rack. Drawers can hold linens, and other items such as out-of-season clothes. The tops of the dressers can hold bins or totes for more storage.

Closet Units

It is possible to have a closet unit installed. One can be purchased at a store and installed by the homeowner easily. It is not difficult to take the existing rod and shelf out of a closet to make this work.

Customized closet storage is another option. A variety of companies offer custom closet solutions based on your space and needs. While this allows you to completely customize your closet with more options than may be available using ready-made products, this is also the most expensive option.
