Adding A Closet At The End Of A Hallway

As you accumulate more and more stuff, you may need additional storage. If your home or apartment lacks sufficient space in closets, try adding one. One good location is at the end of a hallway, often an empty and underutilized space. Get the most out of this square footage by turning it into a closet. With some creativity, you can add closet space at the end of a hall without the cost of knocking down walls. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Plan your space. Decide exactly where you want to add the closet. Keep from blocking any door access to a room, unless that room has another entry and exit point. Do not block any door to a bedroom, as this may be one of two required exits for emergency egress. Decide how much of the hall you will need to dedicate to the closet by considering what you plan to keep in it. Bulky items such as sports gear, holiday decorations and winter clothes will require more space than just linen. Consider all relevant factors before you begin in order to prevent problems later.

2. Separate the space. Instead of building a wall, use a room divider as an inexpensive and simple option to separate the closet from the hallway. This is especially ideal if the space will be used as a closet only for a short time. Options include a folding screen, hanging curtain, temporary wall or even a piece of large furniture such as an armoire that you can strategically place to hide the closet from view.

3. Furnish the closet. Use storage furniture that will hold whatever you plan to store and will also fit within the confined space in the hallway. Choices include shelf stands, a small wardrobe, stackable racks and a bookcase with storage baskets. Maximize often-ignored corner space with a corner shelf unit. Turn the walls into storage with wall-mounted shelves.
