About Mudroom Lockers

Mud room lockers are designed storage spaces in an entry way of a house. Typically found in a secondary entrance of the home, or mud room, lockers are a means of storage and organization for all the things we tend to bring home from school and work. Especially beneficial for kids, lockers go a long way toward the old saying "a place for everything, and everything in its place." Does this Spark an idea?

Significance

The significance of mud room lockers is essentially organization. Although there is an aesthetic or design quality to a well-planned and built locker, the essence is functionality and the ability for family members entering the house to have an instant available location to place objects when they come home.

Function

Mud room lockers are typically designed with shelves, hooks and even seating with a hidden storage area. The shelves provide a place for books, computer bags and other smaller objects or items which need to be placed on a shelf for various reasons. The hooks act as a means for hanging coats, sweaters, and other outer wear. The bench, when incorporated, provides a convenient place to sit and remove shoes prior to entering the main house. If so equipped, the storage box or bin keeps a multitude of shoes out of site and prevents clutter.

Types

There are almost many different types of mud room lockers. The locker's design will depend greatly on the mud room and its design. The design will also depend upon the tastes and needs of the family living in the house. Lockers may be a group of cubes with hooks for coats or it may be a long bench with shelving underneath for storing shoes. Above there may be few or many hooks for coats and little room for shelving.

Size

A great thing about mud room lockers is the ability to custom design for size and space. Even when there is an abundance of room available, it may not be desired for the locker to encompass the entire space. Lockers are basic units which may be custom designed for not only fitting into a space but blending in and accenting a design.

Considerations

When considering the installation of mud room lockers, think about the needs of those primarily using the mud room. If there are small children, the lockers should allow smaller children to access shelves, hooks and bins. If the locker is too difficult to use, items may still find their way onto the floor, defeating the purpose of the locker system.

Prevention/Solution

When designing a mud room locker, keep in mind what the ultimate purpose will be. This will be a area which will most likely receive a lot of wear and tear. Consider the types of finishes and paints to be used. If the area will be used by those participating in athletics, for example, you may want to consider a bin for dirty practice clothing and uniforms. This will be an area which will be emptied regularly and will prevent the smelly clothing from ending up in bins or on shelves.
