Ideas for Small Kids Room
Decorating any small room can be difficult, but kids have so much stuff that it can be a real challenge. Maximize a small bedroom with visual trickery, levels and multi-purpose furniture designed to double the functional living space. A small room for a child can be both fun and functional. Color Splash
The conventional wisdom to paint a small room white or a pale color is out, and bold color is in. Choose a colorful palette with similar values, such as sunny yellow and orange, cool baby blue and pale periwinkle, or pink and purple. To create the illusion of space and add height, use thin vertical stripes on the walls. Paint or paper a border around the top of the walls or paint colorful characters or simple shapes on the wall.
Make It Taller
To add visual vertical space, mount curtains right at the top of the wall and use long, light-colored sheers for an airy look that softens hard lines and lets in light. Choose a tall dresser or armoire in a light color and a simple style to add to the illusion of height and save space.
Avoid Decorative Clutter
A small room will seem even smaller when crowded with small items. Pass on knickknacks and use playthings as decoration by attaching a brightly painted rack for balls and bats (or boas and tiaras) on the wall. Mount lights on the ceiling to save valuable floor and surface space.
Use Functional Furniture
Create a multi-purpose room with furniture that folds up, such as a Murphy bed or sofa. If the ceiling is high enough, choose a loft-style bed that has space underneath for a desk and bookshelves. Keep the furniture lines simple and the colors light. Heavy, dark furniture makes a room look more crowded.
Find Storage Space
Boxes tucked under the bed or a bookshelf turned into toy cubbies with storage boxes keep clutter to a minimum. Add a mudroom bench with shoe cubbies at the foot of the bed for extra seating and easy shoe storage.
Scale It
There are two schools of thought regarding the scale of the furniture in a small room. Conventional wisdom advises smaller furniture, but the modern approach is minimalist with normal-sized furniture. Make the bed the focal point, with a tall headboard or princess-style curtains hung from the ceiling at the head of the bed. A traditional bedroom set with more than three pieces is too much in a small room.
