Commercial silverware organizers are available in plastic and wood. These organizers do not always fit inside the desired drawer. Make an organizer designed specifically for the drawer and the type of silverware to be stored with plywood and balsa wood. You can make slots for additional items such as napkins, serving utensils or cooking utensils as needed. You can also cover the wood with decorative contact paper to coordinate with the kitchen decor as desired. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure the length, width and depth of the inside of the drawer. Cut the plywood so it fits snuggly inside the drawer. Lay the cut plywood on a flat surface so it is facing the same direction it will be inserted into the drawer.
2. Lay one of each item to be stored in the drawer on the piece of plywood so that there is at least 1/2 inch between items. Move the items as desired on the plywood until a final configuration is created. Lay items vertically and horizontally as needed to fill the drawer.
3. Draw straight lines around each object so that there is at least 1/4 inch of space around each object. This is the template for placing the walls of the organizer.
4. Measure along one short edge of the sheet of balsa wood and mark widths that are 1/8 inch less than the height of the drawer. Draw a line the length of the balsa sheet at each mark. Cut along each line.
5. Cut each strip of balsa to the correct length for one of the pencil lines on the plywood sheet. Nail the balsa wood in place on the plywood template.
6. Insert the finished organizer into the drawer.
