Debunk A Bunk Bed

Debunking a bunk bed gives you room under the bed that you can use for just about anything.

Debunking a bunk bed is the process of detaching the bottom bed and top bed from each other. If you remove the bottom bunk, you create a loft bed, which allows you to utilize the space under the bed for storage or to use it for a desk or play area. You also can remove the top half of the bed to convert the bunk bed into two standard beds. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Removing the Bottom Bed

1. Lift the mattress and box spring off the bottom bed and set them aside. In some cases, bunk beds do not have box springs. If this is the case, simply lift the mattress off.

2. Lift up the wire-suspension frame that holds the box spring and mattress onto the frame rails and set it aside.

3. Locate the mounting bolts for the lower bed frame. Remove the bolts that secure the front-frame rail in place with a socket or screwdriver and then set the frame rail aside.

4. Locate the mounting brackets for the wire suspension frame on the three remaining bed rails and remove them with a socket set or screwdriver.

Removing the Top Bed

5. Lift the mattress and box spring off the bottom bed and set them aside. In some cases, bunk beds do not have box springs. If this is the case, simply lift the mattress off.

6. Place a drop cloth over the lower mattress or remove the lower mattress and box spring and set them aside.

7. Select a location on the vertical support posts to cut. For a clean look, select the spot where the supports connect to the top of the bottom bed's frame box.

8. Cut the supports off with a flat saw. Have a second person steady the top part of the bed while you cut through the supports.

9. Sand the cut wood with a sanding block to smooth over the corners of the cut.

10. Paint the cut areas with a stain or paint that matches the color of the bed frame. Use a paintbrush to apply the paint.
