Delouse A Closet

Rid yourself of lice by ridding your closet of lice.


To remove lice, treatment of yoru home environment is just as important as bodily treatments. One room in particular requires special care. Because your closet is chock full of clothing, it is especially vulnerable to lice infestation -- particularly body lice. Delousing your closet is time consuming but completely necessary if you want to rid yourself and your house of lice. Remember that an adult louse can live up to two days away from your body. If you do not focus on your closet, you cannot eliminate the problem.


Instructions


1. Get rid of lice on the people first.


Treat the person who is infested with lice and anyone who has had close physical contact with that individual. Lice removal shampoos and other treatment supplies are available at department and drug stores.


2. Separate all clothing and bedding into three categories: items that are machine washable; items that will need to be dry cleaned; and items that cannot be washed. Do this for all items the infested person has had contact with in the past two days.


3. Wash all washables in hot water.


Wash all machine washable clothing, bedding and pillows with laundry detergent. Use hot water, at least 130° Fahrenheit or 54.4° Celsius, to kill lice and nits.


4. Dry the laundry using the hot cycle, for a minimum of 20 minutes.


5. Place all items that can be dry cleaned inside a sealed plastic bag. Leave them in the bag for at least two weeks before hauling them off to the dry cleaner to ensure that all lice or nits are dead.


6. Seal all other fabric items that cannot be washed or dry cleaned, such as stuffed animals or pillow, inside a plastic bag. Leave them in there for two weeks.


7. Wipe down your closet shelves with a disinfectant spray.


8. Vacuum the closet floors and all upholstered furniture thoroughly.
