For many people, a garage becomes a cluttered dumping ground where you put anything and everything you don't want to keep in the house. In some cases, this makes it nearly impossible to find things when you need them, not to mention turning the garage into an eyesore. By making use of some inexpensive organizational ideas, you can whip your garage into shape; you might even have enough room for your car. Does this Spark an idea?
Hold a Garage Sale
One of the best ways to increase storage space is to hold a garage sale. Remove all unwanted items and organize them for a weekend sale in your front yard. Get the neighbors involved to make it a big event. This will make the organization of the remaining items much easier, and you'll make some extra money in the process.
Create Item Zones
Group like items together into item zones. For example, one area of the garage can be strictly for sporting goods, another area for automotive supplies and a third area for gardening tools. The gardening items should be kept near a side door or the garage opening to allow for easy daily access during the warmer months.
Install Shelves
Purchase inexpensive shelves for your garage walls, or make your own. Place smaller items in cardboard boxes to place on the shelves, and label them to easily identify their contents. The fewer items you have on the floor, the more room you'll have for bigger things.
Use the Ceiling
Make use of your garage's ceiling to create additional floorspace. Inexpensive hooks can be used to safely hang items like bicycles, ropes, stepladders and cords, especially during the winter months when they may be used less frequently.
Mobilize the Trash
If you keep your trash cans in the garage, use the type with wheels. This makes them easier to move to create more storage space, in addition to making them easier to get to the curb and back. If you store the cans along the garage wall, place additional shelving above the cans to make use of that space.
