Ideas For A Moveable Closet

Not all living spaces come complete with a separate closet. Older homes and even newer apartments sometimes lack what some believe is a basic necessity. Movable closet ideas come into play when you lack a closet or don't have adequate closet space in your home. The closets quickly move from one area to the next, but provide enough storage for most of your clothing. Does this Spark an idea?

Movable Wood Closets

Movable wood closets are similar to traditional closets because the pieces feature a large rack for hanging and storing clothing inside. The closets have a large rectangular shape, with two sliding doors on the front. Casters on the bottom make it easy to rotate or move the closets as needed. Armoires also are a possible closet addition to your home. Newer armoires, like those once sold for TVs, often have two doors on top and two or three drawers underneath. When you open the doors, you gain access to the hanging clothes, while the drawers provide more storage. The downside is that wood armoires are fairly heavy and take some effort to move unless you add some heavy-duty casters.

Rolling Racks

Rolling racks are basic movable garment holders that are fairly lightweight, since they consist of a base, two vertical pieces and a cross-piece that accommodates clothes on hangers. Similar to the racks used by professional dry cleaners, the bottom is mounted on four wheels and often features a platform or rack for storing shoes.

Canvas Closets

Canvas closets are similar to rolling racks, except they feature canvas "walls." The canvas makes the rolling rack look more like a traditional closet while protecting the clothing inside from dust. Look for canvas closets that contain additional storage on the outside. Some include pockets that are perfect for storing jewelry, shoes and other accessories.

Alternatives to Closets

Add extra storage space to your home without using a traditional temporary closet. Consider driving two nails into an empty wall in your bedroom and tying a piece of heavy-duty twine to them. It's not strong enough to hold your entire wardrobe, but when you're ready to move it, just remove the nails. You can use a curtain rod instead of twine. Alternately, use trunks or old suitcases stacked on top of each other. It adds a large amount of storage to your home, but the pieces are easy to move when needed.
