Tips For Organizing A Modest Walkin Closet

Investing in organizing tools can help you create the most functional closet.

While a walk-in closet is always a luxury, if it's on the smaller side, it can take not only organization but perseverance to get the most out of the closet. Organizing your clothing and closet items in a logical way will help significantly in allowing you to get the most out of your modest walk-in closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Start at the Bottom

Clean out any unnecessary and unwanted clothing, items or shoes that tend to accumulate on the floor of a walk-in closet. After eliminating the distractions, take a good look at your closet. Organizing your shoes is a manageable place to start. Invest in a shoe rack that can fit well against the back wall of your closet or to the side. After the shoes are no longer strewn about your closet floor, you may be able to better organize the rest of your closet. At the very least, seeing your shoes organized may sustain your enthusiasm for the project.

Make Use of Shelving

Just because it's a closet doesn't mean you have to hang all of your clothes. Often, in smaller walk-ins, you'll find shelving installed to one side of the hanger rack or above the hangers. This is an excellent place to store folded sweaters, pants or any items that don't fit easily in your dresser drawers but that take up too much space or, worse, can be damaged when hung.

Organize by Garment Length

Always keep like lengths together. If you store a long raincoat in with your clothes, right in the center of your closet for instance, you run the risk of losing your little black dress in its folds. Keep all long coats, dresses or hanging slacks to one side of your closet. Shorter dresses and longer shirts can go next to these items, and skirts, shorter shirts and shorter jackets easily fit next in line. Organizing by length will give your closet an orderly look and enable you to find any length garment with relative ease.

Organize by Color and Season

After you have arranged your garments according to length, it is a good idea to go a step further and organize according to color and season. This means that within each length category, you have a range of seasons and colors that you can then organize according to your preference. Keeping like clothes together will simplify both your closet and your life.
