Put A Closet Door Back On The Tracks

Space-saving bi-fold doors can be tricky to reinstall.

Bi-fold closet doors can be an attractive and space-saving addition to the bedroom or den, or can conceal a laundry or pantry area. A downside to these folding doors is that once they have been taken off the track, they can be difficult to reinstall. Following the steps in the right order is key, and having a friend help line up the guide pins makes the job a lot easier. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Look at the hardware before you re-install the door to understand which pieces should line up. The door has a guide pin on the bottom. This fits into a slotted bracket on the floor. At the top of the door is the pivot pin and a guide roller. The pivot pin fits into a hole in the top corner of the track, and the guide roller slides along the length of the track.

2. Keep the door folded. Place the panel with the pivot pin and bottom pin against the door frame. The fold in the door should face outward into the room.

3. Lift the door in its folded position. Put one hand around the folded part of the door. Grip the opposite edge of the guide roller panel with the other hand.

4. Line up the pins on the top of the door first. Push the pivot pin into the stationary hole. Then slip the guide roller into the track.

5. Push up to press the spring-loaded pins into the upper track. This will give you the extra leeway necessary to slide the bottom pin into the slotted hardware. The pin can sit in several positions along the slot. Try to get the pin as close to the door frame as possible. Ask someone to help you guide the bottom pin while you hold the door and top pins in place.

6. Drop the bottom pin into the slot. Check the door's ability to open and close. Look at the alignment of the door. If the door is crooked, or won't close all the way, you'll need to lift the bottom pin again and slide it into the next opening in the bracket. Keep adjusting until the door slides freely and hangs as straight as possible.
