Design A Closet For Free

Design a Closet for Free

If you are planning on adding a closet to a room in your house, you might consider hiring a professional to help you, but for a project this small, many people chose to do it all themselves. But before you build your closet, you will want to design it. Rather than settling for sketches, you might want to take it a step further and use the freeware program Google Sketchup to create a 3-D version of your room and then design the closet inside it.

Instructions

1. Download and install the freeware version of Sketchup to your computer.

2. Take careful measurements of the room where you want to add the closet. Write these numbers down.

3. Write down what you want in your closet, such as shelves and drawers.

4. Start Sketchup. You will see a menu at the top, a toolbar to the left and a large scene view in the middle. In the scene you will see a two-dimensional human figure to help you judge the relative sizes of things you are building.

5. Select the "Line" tool and draw out the shape of your room. Use the numerical display in the lower right corner to make sure you are getting the size right.

6. Select the "Push/Pull" tool and click on the shape you draw. Use the tool to raise the shape to the internal height of the room (again referencing the numerical display).

7. Switch to the "Selection" tool and select the top polygon. Hit "Delete" on the keyboard. This will give you an open view of the room.

8. Use the same techniques used in Step 5 to create the closet and its inner parts. To add a door for the closet, click on the "Add Models" button at the top, and from "Components" select a door you would like to use and add it. Resize it to fit the closet.

9. Click on the "Paintbucket" tool, and from the categories, choose textures you would like to use for your closet. Click to apply the textures. Save your work.
