Maintain Cleanliness
Closets often become a storage place for all that is old and unwanted, and many times, the old and unwanted things are dirty. Dirt on clothing, walls or other items becomes food for mold and mildew, which can only continue to grow if it has enough food. To prevent mildew from growing in your closets, keep them clean and tidy. Wash down walls and floors, clean all clothing and make sure anything else in the closet has been cleaned and disinfected.
Keep Areas Dry
Mold and mildew thrive in damp areas, where the food, or dirt, they need to grow is more available. If your closet is located in an area of the house that tends to be damp, like a basement, you may need to do some waterproofing with cement paint and sealant. Otherwise, you can use air conditioners and dehumidifiers to take some of the dampness out of the air. If moisture is a big problem in your closet, buy a small dehumidifier specifically for the closet. If moisture is not a big problem, try leaving the closet door open so that some of the cooler air from the rest of the house can filter into the closet.
Circulate the Air
To prevent mold and mildew, fresh air needs to be circulated through enclosed areas, especially places like closets that tend to be closed off for long periods of time. If you can, leave your closet door open and place a fan near the door to conduct air into and around the closet. If possible, you can install a small exhaust fan in the closet just like the kinds you find in bathrooms. Make sure clothes are hanging loosely and not packed in tightly together. Air should circulate around and through the clothing in order to keep clothes and closet dry and mildew-free.
