Dress Like A Hippie With Clothes In Your Closet

Many hippie fashion traits are still mainstream.

The term "hippie" was coined in the 1960s to refer to a youth, bohemian subculture that was influencing every cultural outlet in America. Fashion, like music, art, politics and much more, was one such outlet in which hippies expressed their newfound perspectives and ideas about self-expression. Because the basic tenets of hippie fashion - freedom, love and individualism, among others - are less about physical clothes than the intangible meanings they convey, you can dress like a hippie with just the clothes in your closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Take all the clothes out of your closet and arrange them by color and style. Not only does this give you a chance to see all your clothes at once, it will also help indicate which pieces are the best for dressing like a hippie.

2. Remove pieces that are considered the norm for your daily life. This might include a grey or navy suit for men, or pantsuits for women. Hippies refused to conform to the norms of American culture. They sought to overturn the norms by dressing in ways that not only caught people's attention, it also protested the status quo. In fact, many hippies eschewed clothes entirely and walked around in public naked.

3. Isolate any pieces that have bright patterns, floral motifs, or unusual characteristics. Ill-fitting pieces should be isolated as well. Hippies wore bright and geometric patters and fabrics to express themselves. They also favored flowers as a symbol of love. Separate your loudest pieces and plan on wearing them.

4. Isolate the most comfortable clothes of the bunch. Hippies felt that you should be comfortable at all times, and they rejected the idea of wearing stuffy clothes simply because of social expectations.

5. Accessorize with big and many dangling items, beads, headbands, loop earrings, badges and pins. They do not have to correspond to the rest of your outfit. The flashy accessories are a part of the higher goal of self-expression. Growing your hair and facial hair long was also in fashion among hippies.

6. Compose an outfit. Do not concern yourself with the fit or the way the clothes match. Pick the most comfortable, loudest clothes that you feel express who you are.
